The University of Hull has recently announced a substantial investment to enable a step change in the University’s research and enterprise performance, in line with its strategic ambition. The investment includes the establishment of an Institute for Clinical and Applied Health Research. This post is one of the first appointments to be made to this Institute, which will be housed within a new build on our health campus (due for completion end of 2016). As part of this investment we plan to significantly expand our clinical and applied population health and health services research, focusing more on large studies aimed at understanding and improving health and health care in the local population.
Our current research includes work on understanding inequalities for cancer patients at diagnosis and towards the end of life, and work on exploring the ways in which the new NHS structures are able to address inequalities. This is an area of particular relevance for our local population and so we plan to expand it. The local population is stable and there are therefore significant opportunities to develop population based studies to understand the best mechanisms for health care which would have an impact in reducing inequalities. We would welcome interest in this post from those with an interest in understanding the social determinants of health, in studying the variation in health services and outcomes, or in developing health related interventions to reduce health inequalities.
