Nordic Noir: Scandinavian crime fiction from page to screen
Thursday 6th November at 7.30pm
Watford Palace Theatre Reherasal Room.
Starting first with novels but then percolating into English-language BBC productions and Hollywood remakes, Scandinavian crime fiction has become an international phenomenon. Tonight's clip-illustrated presentation looks at the rich history of 'Nordic noir', examines the appeal of this particular genre and attempts to reveal why it is distinct from the plethora of other crime fictions. Examining the popularity of Stieg Larsson's international success with his Millennium trilogy, as well as Henning Mankell's Wallander across the various media, the presentation also tracks some lesser-known novels, television programmes and films. The talk is coupled with a screening of the Swedish thriller Easy Money on Monday 15th December.
Steven Peacock is Reader in Film and Television Aesthetics at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. He is the author of a number of books including Swedish Crime Fiction: Novel, Film, Television (2013) published by Manchester University Press.
