Industry has consistently shown it is not capable of self regulation; the profit lure is just too strong. There will always be disagreement where industry chooses to push the boundaries (and industry will always try), this is normal. Remove LA regulation and you move this boundary, and not in a direction that protects the health of the public. For all the fancy rhetoric let’s remember we are cleaning land that has been polluted by industry, often due to a lack of regulatory control.
David Jackson makes the point that his time would be better spent dealing with residential properties on a nasty former chemical works site. But surely this highlights lax standards of the past, how could such houses have ever been built? I know deregulation is all the rage at the moment but let’s not keep repeating the same mistakes.
