Technical Project Manager

This is a unique opportunity to join Royal Museums Greenwich at a time of
change. The opening of the Sammy Offer Wing in 2011 marked the beginning of
a series of exciting redevelopments, both physical and digital — including
a programme of high-profile special exhibitions and new ways of interacting
with archives.

The Design & Digital Media team is responsible for the Museum’s creative
use of technology for public programmes. Our networked systems are core to
the visitor experience, whether that’s online or on-site in our galleries.
Increasingly, our systems must work seamlessly across all platforms.

The Museum’s digital strategy formalises its commitment to open data,
citizen science and open-source approaches, with ambitious plans for mobile
interpretation.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the delivery
of the Museum’s digital strategy. They will also keep the Museum at the
forefront of innovative approaches to public engagement.

You will liaise with staff in all departments across the museum –
especially those in Collections Management, IT, Learning & Interpretation
and Exhibitions – and work with external partners and collaborations.

Aims of the Role

The Technical Project Manager is responsible for delivery of digital
products and services, as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The Technical
Project Manager will facilitate the collaborative working of cross-Museum
development teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership of the Museum’s digital media and
infrastructure

• Manage and motivate multi-disciplinary teams (comprised of developers,
information architects, designers, test analysts, and others as required)
and support collaborative working

• Ensure that business objectives are clearly defined and agreed at the
start of all projects, and evaluated regularly

• Procure external services, when required, including identifying and
championing new talent, developing briefs, negotiating contracts, rights
and fees

• Understand and correctly translate project requirements and priorities
into smaller deliverables, features and user stories, providing delivery
management and quality assurance of software projects throughout their full
lifecycle

• Regularly track and communicate project status and progress to project
stakeholders as required. Employ effective and appropriate risk, issue, and
dependency evaluation and management approaches, recognising and
communicating early signs of difficulty and delay

• Produce, or manage the production of, appropriate project documentation
at each stage of a project lifecycle

• Support the implementation and culture of an agile software delivery
methodology

• Improve the standard of technical delivery and competencies within the
Museum, by sharing expertise, developing standards, and quality assurance
of key projects

• Seek out new collaborations and platforms to build capacity within the
Museum

• Line manage the Web Developer and other staff, as appropriate

Skills and Experience:

Essential

• A recognised project management qualification and significant experience
of delivering large, complex software projects on time and on budget

• Creative flair and experience of working with new technologies,
preferably in the arts/cultural or media sectors

• Experience of delivering projects using PRINCE II or agile methodologies.
A good understanding of the benefits of using a formal project management
process and the ability to articulate these benefits clearly

• Broad technical knowledge of application architecture, system
architecture, relational databases, object oriented languages and web
technologies

• Demonstrable experience of resource estimating and planning and managing
budgets within projects (projects of at least 6 months duration, with
budgets of £100-500k)

• Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholder groups and
audiences, making allowances for different levels of technical understanding

• Experience of leading multi-disciplinary delivery teams of between 4-10
people

• A track record of good relationship management including motivation,
collaboration and communication; ability to influence at a senior level

• A good and up-to-date understanding of the creative industries

• Ability to think strategically and evaluate options in the short, medium
and long term, with an understanding of digital preservation

Desirable

• A strong interest in digital forms of public engagement and an enthusiasm
for museum objects

• Experience of delivering digital services in a physical space

• Experience of complex system administration

• ScrumMaster certification

• An understanding of the Museum or wider public sector

• An understanding of editorial, compliance, and regulatory issues
