Last month, UConn quarterback Casey Cochran stunned fans by announcing
that he was quitting football after suffering a concussion, the last of
several he absorbed playing the game he loved.
.
The son of legendary high school coach Jack Cochran, Casey likes to joke
that he'd been born with a football in his crib. He was a record-setting
player in high school and a rising star on a team sorely in need of one.
The senior Cochran was so distressed by his son's abrupt retirement that
he broke down in tears.
.
All of which makes it that much more remarkable that Cochran a kid born
and bred for football heroics was able to look past the allure of the
game and face the profound risks it posed to his health. But he's hardly
alone.
.
Less than a week later, David Ash, a ballyhooed quarterback at University
of Texas, made the same decision.
.
Some fans may be wondering exactly what's going on with their sport, which
has long celebrated the virtues of playing hurt..
.
What's going is, in fact, an outbreak of common sense.
.
After all, football has always been based on a corrupt bargain: young men
play the game to win glory and possible riches. But in the process, they
inflict and quietly absorb massive numbers of bone-rattling hits.
.
Whether we admit this or not, we fans love these hits. This is why the
networks place those parabolic microphones on the sidelines and replay the
most violent collisions repeatedly.
.
The dilemma (for players and fans) is that medical science finally has
caught up to our most popular sport. We are now being forced to
acknowledge the true cost of all those collisions, both the catastrophic
ones that cause concussions and the thousands of smaller sub-concussive
blows incurred on every play.
.
NFL officials after years of denying the link between the game and brain
damage recently admitted in federal court documents that they expect up
to 30 percent of former players to suffer from long-term cognitive
ailments, and at "notably younger ages" than the general population.
