October 2011: in the wake of the August riots, David Cameron pledged to turn around the lives of 120,000 ‘problem families’— those suffering from a combination of low incomes, poor qualifications and mental health issues.
A year later, Louise Casey’s review of 16 families struggling with crime, addiction and abuse made the headlines — ‘the neighbours from hell’ — and the 120,000 families quickly became inseparable with depravity in the public mind.
At this free seminar Full Fact will be sharing their experience of checking political claims underpinned by social research, in fields such as the economy, health, education, crime and immigration. Q & A follows.
Since setting up in 2010, Full Fact has secured corrections from almost every major national newspaper — from the Sun to the Financial Times — as well as politicians from all parties. Last year Full Fact received an award for transparency from the Political Studies Association, pioneered live-factchecking on BBC Question Time and LBC radio, and successfully campaigned for the political establishment to recognise the importance of communication in official statistics.
