Dear list members,
It appears to be a citation of Jeff Cooper:
'It has long been a principle of mine that a man cannot have too many books, too many wines, or too much ammunition.'
It was published in
Jeff Cooper's Commentaries Previously Gunsite Gossip Vol. 4, No. 9 August, 1996

(John Dean "Jeff" Cooper was a United States Marine and the creator of what is known as "the Modern Technique" of handgun shooting, and one of the 20th century's foremost international experts on the use and history of small arms.)

T> ??Dear All
T> John spotted Ecclesiastes 12 12 with commendable speed, but it doesn't quite fit the bill. The King James gives us:
T> "Of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh."
T> A modern American translation simplifies this to:
T> "People never stop writing books. Too much studying will wear out your body."
T> So no red wine, much less ammunition.
T> The phrase is widely attributed to Kipling, but frankly it sounds more like Teddy Roosevelt!
T> Best wishes

T> I feel duly admonished for my profitless study, though you could also be advising me benevolently not to stray beyond the words of the master.
T> Point taken, though I was mildly curious about that quotation.

There's one which crops up which goes something like 'A Man can never have too many books or too much red wine' (sometimes, adding to the improbability in my mind, the words 'or too much ammunition' are added). Can anyone identify a source? There are certainly several faux Kipling quotes bandied around. Anyone got any favourites?
