We sourced new large taxidermy (giraffe, wolf, moose, zebra, three large antelopes) in the years 2003-2010 and in each case we agreed with the taxidermy firm what our standards would be in terms of ethics and most but not all skins came from zoo/wildlife park animals. We did not deal directly with zoos, as there were no local taxidermists here operating at this scale of expertise so there was no sense in getting a local zoo cadaver then flying in a taxidermist to skin the animal and export the skin for processing. We worked with a Dutch taxidermy firm that had its own contacts over decades with various zoos or wildlife parks in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, and also with trophy hunters who occasionally sell skins and horns to finance their hunting expeditions.
The firm we used is at www.jacbouten.com and they have supplied a number of UK museums and work a lot with Naturalis in Leiden on displays. There are few such firms around these days, particularly in Europe, and theirs acts as a distributor for taxidermy supplies to the trade and has four generations and a century of expertise to offer.
Follow this link to see one of our exhibits being prepared at their workshop (a sable antelope, know in-house as the 'stable' antelope as it is rearing up on its hind legs and fascinates visitors by not needing to stand on all-fours):

Subject: New taxidermy
Hi,
Does anyone have experience of ethically sourcing new large taxidermy for display? In particular, does anyone have experience of building partnerships with zoos?

Thanks as always,
