An Introduction from the new Book Reviews Editors (and currently available books to review)

Sociology of Health and Illness has recently appointed us, Dr Rebecca Dimond and Dr Gareth M. Thomas (Cardiff University), as the new book reviews editors for the journal. Since both of us have been actively involved with the medical sociology community over a number of years, we are delighted to be taking on this role.



SHI publishes reviews of new books (i.e. first editions only) dealing with various topics relevant to medical sociology, whether these are theoretical contributions or reports of empirical research. Books reviewed can be monographs or edited collections but SHI does not typically publish reviews of methodological books or textbooks.



We welcome reviewers at any stage of their career, from a variety of disciplines associated with medical sociology (including anthropology, psychology, geography, history, medicine, nursing etc).



So why would you want to review a book for SHI? You get to read (and keep) a book that is relevant to your topic and possibly one you are planning to read anyway, and you can share knowledge with your academic peers. For PhD students and early career academics in particular, writing a book review can sharpen your writing skills and ability to critically engage with scholarly work, enhance your CV, and give you an insight into the publishing process.



Book reviews for SHI are around 800 words. We have the following books that are now available to review:

  *   A History of Lung Cancer: The Recalcitrant Disease (Carsten Timmermann)
  *   Bad Souls: Madness and Responsibility in Modern Greece (Elizabeth Anne Davis)
  *   Cut it Out: The C-Section Epidemic in America (Theresa Morris)
  *   Disability, Human Rights and the Limits of Humanitarianism (edited by Michael Gill and Cathy J. Schlund-Vials)
  *   Gendered Drugs and Medicine: Historical and Socio-Cultural Perspectives (edited by Teresa Ortiz-Gómez and María Jesús Santesmases)
  *   Generic: The Unbranding of Modern Medicine (Jeremy A. Greene)
  *   Habits: Remaking Addiction (Suzanne Fraser, David Moore, and Helen Keane)
  *   Health and Citizenship (edited by Frank Huisman and Harry Oosterhuis)
  *   Heart-Sick: The Politics of Risk, Inequality, and Heart Disease (Janet K. Shim)
  *   Nutritionism: The Science and Politics of Dietary Advice (Gyorgy Scrinis)
  *   Phantom Limb: Amputation, Embodiment, and Prosthetic Technology (Cassandra S. Crawford)
  *   Pills for the Poorest: An Exploration of Trips and Access to Medication in Sub-Sahara Africa (Emilie Cloatre)
  *   Regulating Alcohol Around the World: Policy Cocktails (Tiffany Bergin)
  *   The Already Dead: The New Time of Politics, Culture, and Illness (Eric Cazdyn)
  *   The Social Pathologies of Contemporary Civilisation (edited by Kieran Keohane and Anders Petersen)
  *   Toxic Communities: Environmental Racism, Industrial Pollution, and Residential Mobility (Dorceta E. Taylor)

If you would like to review one of these books, or if you have a suggestion of a book you would like to review that falls within the broad interests of SHI, please do get in contact with us. Books for review will be allocated on a ‘first come first serve’ basis. And if you would like to review a book in the future, do contact us and say what topics you are interested in so we can add you to our database. Our details are available at the end of this email.
