2014 TASA Health Sociology Thematic Group Symposium



The Value of Health: The Refiguring of Health and Health Care Under Neoliberalism



Friday 28 November, University of South Australia, Adelaide (following directly from the annual TASA Conference at the same location)

Keynote speakers: Professor Fran Baum (Flinders University) and Associate Professor Kevin White (Australian National University)



On the 30th anniversary of Medicare, Australia's national health insurance scheme, the focus of this symposium is on the past and future of health care provision in Australia and elsewhere. In light of recent neoliberal health policy shifts, many are concerned that health and health care are now being fundamentally, and perhaps irreversibly, refigured as commodities that can be valued in economic terms like other goods and services. This symposium looks to the past and to the future to ask what the consequences are of conceiving health in this way, and what values are sustained and threatened in the process? And importantly, what can and should sociologists do to promote alternative ways of valuing health?

This is a free event, but participants are asked to register by emailing Caragh Brosnan ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by 10 November. Catering is not included but refreshments will be available at nearby outlets.



Postgraduate bursaries:



Three bursaries to a maximum value of $100 each are available to assist postgraduate students to attend the event. Applicants must be student members of TASA. Eligible students should apply by contacting Caragh Brosnan ([log in to unmask]). Bursaries will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis and funds will be provided after the event when recipients will be requested to submit receipts for reimbursement.
