Indian Socialist Animation : The relevance of the Auteur in Developmental Animation.
In 1956, Claire H. Weeks a former Disney animator was invited by the Indian Films Division to train animators for it's new Cartoon Film Unit. The Unit's animators went on to make films for the Indian government's 3rd Five-year plan on subjects such as family planning ( Baap Re Baap, 1969) and national integrity ( Ek Anek, Ektha, 1974)
This paper will look at the animation produced in India within a post-colonial developmental context. It will ask the following questions: What are the intrinsic qualities of animation that made/make it suitable as medium of social communication in India? What were existing narrative traditions in India that influenced the making of these films? What were these films inspired by visually? How did the Indian government support and encourage the production, distribution and screening of animation short films? What was/is the role of the auteur in Developmental animation?
It will simultaneously examine animated short films produced in the west, in particular the UK and Canada, looking at similarities and differences in the roles that different governments have had in shaping the course of animation history.
