Subject: Contract Opportunity: calling all software developers
Hi All,
Immediate Expressions of Interest are invited for a contract to design
and upload content to a software package that will enable interpretive
information for a museum to be presented on touchscreen tablets.
Auchindrain, just south of Inveraray in Argyll, is a 22-acre historic
site of national importance that is operated as a museum. As a result
of recent research, a large and rich body of information is available
in relation to the historical development of the site and its
significance within Scottish culture and history. At present, very
little of this information is readily accessible to visitors to the
museum. Because of the nature of the site conventional approaches to
museum interpretation (typically, graphic panels and labels) are not
considered to be feasible or appropriate, with the outcome being a
strategic decision that interpretation should be presented on
touchscreen tablets carried by visitors.
It is anticipated that geopositioning will enable the tablets to offer
location-relevant content. The content, which will consist primarily
of text supported by still and moving images and sound, will be
arranged into a small number of overall themes. It is envisaged that
thumbnails, in-text hyperlinks and "more" buttons will enable users to
explore a quite significant volume of content in as much or as little
detail as they wish, whilst also being able to range free across what
is available to pursue lines of enquiry. This content will be prepared
by other specialists, within a separate contract, working in parallel.
The museum does not have a pre-formed view in relation to the software
approach that might be taken: "app", offline website, or something
else. As a first step, the individual, company or consortium selected
to deliver this contract will be expected to familiarise themselves
with the context, liaise closely with museum management, and provide
carefully-considered expert advice informed by experience on the
software approach to be taken. Once this is resolved, the programme
calls for an alpha version with some content to be available by May
2015, with a beta version with substantial (but not all) content then
being available for field testing during July, August and September.
Taking account of feedback received, both content and software are
then seen as being finalised during the winter of 2015-16, ready for
full launch in April 2016.
A key requirement is that the software should be constructed so as to
make it possible for museum staff to edit the content with relative
ease, to make corrections, add new material, or change locations,
links and formats in the light of user feedback. Finally, the museum
is keen to appoint someone who is likely to be available into the
future to handle refreshment, renewal, updating and migration as
necessary, with such work being subject to other financial
arrangements.
Expressions of Interest should be submitted as soon as possible, by
email to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, and should set out the relevant
experience of the person or people who would undertake most of the
work on this contract: in the case of companies, general portfolio
experience will not be considered. For those invited to progress to
the next stage, a dialogue will provide additional information and
answer questions so as to enable fully costed proposals, including an
indication of hourly rates and an outline programme, to be submitted
by email by 5pm on Monday 1st December 2014.
The contract is conditional on the success of grant applications where
decisions will be known in early December. Subject to this, interviews
will be held and an appointment made immediately before or after
Christmas, with a view to a start being made as early as possible in
the New Year.
The museum does not anticipate needing to spend much more than £20,000
on this work.
