For what it's worth I went to this conference on Monday and it was excellent, what they are trying to achieve and have achieved already with iiif is fantastic. In a nutshell they have developed a framework for an image viewer for CH websites that has excellent zoom and multi-image type presentation and a semantic description layer that goes with the images, plus a whole lot more including (finally) a good use for JPEG2000 (or OpenJPEG as it is now apparently called) outside of just reducing storage space.
It's already in use via many institutions and I would recommend anyone looking at how they present images on their site to look here first, and it's open source!

> The day will focus on how museums, galleries, libraries and archives, or any online image service, can take advantage of a powerful technical framework for interoperability between image repositories. This event will be valuable for senior leaders, organizational decision makers, repository and collection managers, software engineers, and anyone interested in exploring the wide range of use cases that are seamlessly enabled by the framework. This is the only such event planned, so don't miss it!
