Many of you will know Dr Ross Parry
<http://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/museumstudies/people/dr-ross-parry> for
his brilliant presentations and books on digital heritage, his leadership
of the museum studies field, and for his awesome ability to capture an
entire day's discussion with a few waves of his hand. His recent work on
the 'post-digital Museum' looks at how the organisational structures and
strategies of several national museums have changed as 'digital' thinking
has permeated other areas of practice. We hope you're as excited as we are
to hear his thoughts on how museums - and the people within them - are
adapting to meet the challenges and opportunities of the digital age.
In other UKMW14 news, Danny Birchall and I have written an article for the
Guardian's Culture Professionals Network, 'Post-web technology: what comes
next for museums?
It discusses some of the presentations you'll hear at UKMW14
<http://museumscomputergroup.org.uk/2014/08/12/ukmw14-programme/>, and
raises some of the questions at the heart of the day: have museums moved
beyond the web, or has the web moved museums on? And how can museums of all
shapes and sizes find the right paths when technologies, funding and
audience expectations change so rapidly? Come and learn what others have
done, and join the conversation on the day.
The Museums Computer Group's #UKMW14 'Museums Beyond The Web' will be held
at the Natural History Museum in London on Friday November 7 2014. Tickets
are just £75 for members (and £37.50 for students/unwaged attendees) and
includes lunch and morning and afternoon tea.
UKMW attendees usually tweet up a storm, but there's nothing like being
there on the day. We've built in plenty of refreshment breaks to keep
energy levels high and give you time to meet and catch up with other
digital specialists in the museum and heritage sector. Don't delay - book
today! http://ukmw14.eventbrite.co.uk/
The programme includes:
Mobile Beyond the Museum
A smart phone can be so much more than an enhanced audioguide. This session
takes us out of the gallery, onto the streets and beyond even a mobile
signal, with practitioners pushing mobile technology to its limits and
delivering new experiences. Featuring Alex Butterworth, Oxford University
Museums; Martha Henson, Ros Westwood and Ben Bedwell, Buxton Museum; Rick
Lawrence, Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery.
Connections Beyond the Organisation
The most important connections the web makes are the human ones. This
session looks at how collaborative digital experiences are created between
multiple organisations, how data itself can be better connected, and asks
whose purpose digitisation ultimately serves. Featuring Rebecca Bartlett,
Ammba / Nymbol; Stephen Brown, De Montfort University; Oluwatoyin Sogbesan.
Experiences Beyond the Screen
Digital media is escaping even the flat screen of mobile phones. Wearable
technology and the new generation of virtual reality offer radically
immersive experiences: can these easily become part of the everyday museum
experience? Featuring Marco Mason, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and University of Leicester; Tara Copplestone; Daniela Petrelli, Sheffield
Hallam University.
