There is lots of innovation coming out of public gardens!
In the context of open data, The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) ,
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/ , which is a global consortium of
botanical garden and natural history libraries that have digitized their
collections, has placed over 45 million pages of open access content
online. The Missouri Botanical Garden, which is the technical development
team for BHL, currently has 3 grant funded projects that build on top of
this content through crowdsourcing descriptions of natural history
illustrations [1], gamifying OCR correction [2], and data mining and
semantic markup of the content [3].
I would also mention Bob Coulter at the The Litzinger Road Ecology Center
[4] , an educational center at the Missouri Botanical Garden, has been
doing some very interesting work with augmented reality and having students
design their own computer games as a tool to understand science.
