As a parallel/alternative to Phil Bradley's fake/spoof sites, I've
just used in a training session three of my favourite examples of
sites which are not fake, in that (I think!) they mean what they say,
but demonstrate that you can find a Web site to back up just about any
ludicrous assertion:
- the world is flat (http://theflatearthsociety.org)
- bananas give you cancer
(http://theinnozablog.blogspot.com/2010/12/carbine-rippen-bananas-cause-cancer.html)
- the Apollo moon landings were faked
http://www.ufos-aliens.co.uk/cosmicapollo.html
You could, of course, argue that those sites are fairly obviously not
authoritative; but I use them to make the point that sites like that
are just as likely to show up in Google search results as
authoritative sites, so that starting from Google rather than the
Library's RDS or databases just creates more filtering work for the
student who has to eliminate them...
