Dear colleagues,
The Institute of Social Anthropology at the University of Bern and the University of Teacher Education, PHBern in Switzerland are looking for an excellent candidate to undertake a doctoral project as part of a Swiss-Turkish research cooperation, funded by the Swiss National Foundation.
The project will look at the educational pathways of young unaccompanied asylum seekers aged between 14 and 21, a group whose access to education is frequently described as at-risk. Based on two in-depth ethnographic studies, one in Switzerland, the other in Turkey , the goal of this project is to come to a better understanding of how different legal, political and educational frameworks restrict or enhance young people’s educational opportunities. While the dynamics in Turkey and Switzerland are marked by different characteristics, they both produce highly contingent situations, establishing (enforced) transnationalism and mobility as a new normality for many young people and raising the question of how these changed conditions form and transform their educational pathways. In comparing the lived experiences of young unaccompanied asylum seekers in the two countries, we intend to establish how different degrees of control and uncertainty, and agency and ambition impact on young people’s educational biographies.
The doctoral project based on ethnographic fieldwork in Turkey will be conducted by the PhD-student and will add an important dimension to the study. The successful candidate will receive a 3-year scholarship of approx. 40,000€ gross per year, and in addition conference and travel costs will be covered.
For a description of the selection criteria, contact details and more information please read the attached job description [Moderator's note: please see the information pasted below]. The application deadline is the 10th of November 2014.
