Hello Owen. I agree with John that revisiting the risk assessment might help re-prioritise sites. However, landfill gas is one of the main reasons the legislation came into being. We are now in a position where we can drill and install gas monitoring boreholes at cost (i.e. pipe, gravel, bentonite and a second-hand well cover plus a tablespoonful of diesel for the rig) using our award-winning shared services. One of our party bought a hydraulic percussion drilling rig (capital budget) so it just comes down to officer hours on site. I have heard there are plans to set up a similar group in the Home Counties using our memorandum of understanding as a starting point. This time next year you could be providing even better value for your council and for your residents! Cheers, Don.

Subject: Alternative ground gas monitoring techniques
Dear All,
In the London Borough of Hounslow, we have a substantial number of former landfill sites of a range of ages, sizes and fill types. The monitoring that we have done at these sites is also pretty variable. The best monitored sites feature well installed boreholes with permanently in situ gas taps but in other locations, less monitoring has been done, or monitoring was done some years ago using techniques that are no longer current. We are looking at doing some additional monitoring to check for off site gas migration risks. My question is what is the best technique to use? The standard approach would be to commission some monitoring boreholes but is there value in alternative techniques such as flux boxes or internal gas surveys of nearby buildings or infrastructure which might allow us to sample across a wider area at the same cost.
Regards,
Owen
