An invitation to the inaugural Festival of Humanities…
Northumbria University’s Long Eighteenth-Century Research group are excited to be participating in ‘Being Human’, the first national festival of the Humanities, taking place 15-23 November. The festival is funded by the School of Advanced Studies, the British Academy and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
During the festival we’ll be running a series of free public events across Newcastle city centre including film screenings, reconstructions and public talks upon the theme of ‘18th-Century Legacies’, exploring the links between today’s society and the 18th century.

Public lecture on early actresses and celebrity culture at the Theatre Royal
‘An Evening at the Coffee House’ launch party and reconstruction of an C18th coffee house at Blake’s on Grey Street

Walking tour of 18th-century Newcastle

Tyneside screening of ‘A Cock and Bull Story’ (2005)
Tuesday 18:
Public talks on ‘Fashionable Diseases in Georgian Britain’ at the Mining Institute

Tyneside screening of ‘Bright Star’ (2009)

Public lecture on ‘Fanny Hill’, Britain’s first erotic novel, at the Lit & Phil
Friday 21:
Tyneside screening of ‘The Madness of King George’ (1994)
Saturday 22:
Reconstruction of an early Lit & Phil debate on the banning of Byron’s ‘Don Juan’ (accompanying exhibition runs throughout festival)
Public talks on ideas of liberty in the 18th-century at the Lit & Phil
