The National Gallery is seeking to appoint an archivist. The archive holds records generated by the Gallery in the course of its business. These records are Public Records, and the archive is recognised as a place of deposit by the National Archives. The archive also acquires records from individuals and corporate bodies, where they have a particular relevance to the history of the Gallery, its Collection, or the history of collecting European paintings. The archive forms part of the National Gallery Research Centre which has a primary responsibility for managing, conserving and providing both physical and digital access to the Gallery's library and archive collections. The Research Centre exists to support the Gallery's research strategy and ensure its research resources are made available to the widest possible audience, including both national and international visitors and digital users, as well as Gallery staff.
This role has responsibility for the management of all aspects of the National Gallery Archive. It will play a key part in the activities of the Research Centre and across the Gallery. This includes responsibility for the maintenance and development of the National Gallery Archive and for facilitating access to the information it contains. Additionally the post-holder will lead on the development, documentation and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, government requirements and public expectations in respect of all Gallery records.
The successful candidate will have a MA/Diploma in Archives/Records Management or equivalent qualification as well as professional experience of working as an archivist/records manager. As the Gallery's expert on archives and records management, you will have an in-depth practical knowledge of current archival and records management theory and practice. You will need to be flexible and open to new initiatives as well as a team player with excellent communication skills. You will have a broad knowledge of western European painting and an understanding of the museum sector will be advantageous.
