Thanks everyone for your responses to my request for a show of hands as to the provision of WiFi networks.
As promised a quick summary.
17 institutions replied, 11 local authority, 3 university and 3 which were neither LAs nor universities.
4 did not provide WiFi, although 1 was in the process of arranging it and another specified it would be available in their new building.
13 institutions provided a WIFi network, of these all but 2 were operating within a joint service or shared building/facilities arrangement.
Most of them weren't able to provide a breakdown of costs - either they were paid centrally as part of the joint arrangement, or costs were re-charged unitemised.
One colleague pointed out that many users of mobile devices will already have their own data plans - and questioned whether it was the best use of scarce resources to provide this service in a location which doesn't already have access.
