Dear anthropologist friends,
We, Ka-Kin (D.Phil candidate, Oxford) and Eric (Ph.D. candidate, Calgary),
invite you to join a group concerning the on-going civil disobedience
movement in Hong Kong.
Consider the current situation in Hong Kong, it is undoubtedly urgent to
present on-site witness of the movement to the world. As anthropologists
from Hong Kong, we believe a long-term anthropological engagement into the
movement is also necessary. Whilst it is yet to see its outcome, it is
foreseeable that the movement would bring paradigmatic shift to grassroots
activism, everyday resistance, and political participation in post-occupy
central Hong Kong. These shifts take time to materialise, and as such
anthropologists can be good observers of the process. Therefore, we are
organising a group anthropological brainstorming project on the movement
and its development. Through this project, we aim to (1) contribute to the
public debate in Hong Kong, and (2) raise awareness of the international
scholar communities on the issue.
It should be noted that at the moment we just have some preliminary ideas
on what we can do collectively. So it is important to hear from you in
regard to this proposal and, more specifically, whether you want to join
this project and what contribution we should make. Please keep in mind that
saying 'yes' at the moment does not mean any commitment - we simply want to
hear your voices and see what we should do next.
To facilitate the brainstorming exercise, we have created a Google Drive
Folder for us to document and share materials on the movement that are
anthropologically related (e.g. texts, commentaries, images, field notes,
etc.). The URL is

Eric is currently the drive owner. By sharing data and findings online, it
is hoped that we can then write and publish something collectively while
everyone can also work on their independent research on the topic.
We (Ka-Kin and Eric) will keep track of the project and provide updates of
its progress. Should you have inquiries and suggestions, please email us at

Please feel free to forward this invitation to other anthropologists and
students.
Best regards,
Ka-kin Cheuk (Oxford) &
Eric Siu-kei Cheng (Calgary)
