Medical Statistician

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Medical Statistician (2 years fixed term) to join the clinical trials team in the Trust's Research, Development & Innovation Department. You will work closely with the Senior Medical Statistician to provide researchers from a wide variety of specialties across the Trust with, but not limited to, statistical advice, methodological expertise and study design support. Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital employing more than 8,000 members of staff. The Trust is actively involved in clinical trials and, currently, sponsors more than 100 active studies.
Reporting to the Senior Medical Statistician, you will play a major role in running a statistical consultancy service for researchers. You will support the investigators in designing their trials, randomisation, data management, statistical analysis, funding applications and statistical reports for publications. In addition, you will help to develop and deliver courses on statistical aspects of research, particularly to those new to research. You will also contribute to other aspects of the R&D Department operations. Experience of writing, or contributing to, the drafting of funding applications is desirable.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual, who will be able to work flexibly and contribute to the establishment of a Registered Clinical Trials Unit. You will be a good team member with a strong work ethic and motivation for continuous personal development.
You will possess at least an MSc in Medical Statistics or equivalent degree. You must have appropriate IT knowledge and experience in at least one of the major statistical packages (e.g. STATA) and excellent communication skills. Excellent written and verbal communication and organisational skills are essential to this post. Experience of clinical trials and consultancy services are desirable. Please note this position requires the post holder to travel as required to meetings with Research Design Services Units and other Clinical Trials Units.
The interview will involve a 15 minute work-based scenario requiring a sample size calculation (based on one-sample paired t-test). You will also be required to give a 10 minute presentation on “An area of research you have carried out or being involved with”.
