The University of Leeds Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) is looking to appoint an academic fellow to develop and lead a portfolio of clinical trials research and novel methodologies within musculoskeletal disease (MSK).

Clinical trials are the gold standard methodology for the evaluation of new treatment and interventions. The CTRU in Leeds is an NCRI accredited and UKCRC registered Clinical Trials Unit, which has been described as an impressive and inspirational trials unit by NIHR NETSCC. It provides the experience, expertise and infrastructure necessary for the promotion and conduct of high quality randomised clinical trials, underpinned by methodological research. You will be situated in Leeds CTRU, which currently employs 25-30 statisticians working on 100+ trials, from first in man evaluations through to large international evaluations. There is also an active programme of seminars, a journal club, joint meetings with the Academic Unit of Health Economics and a methodology discussion group providing impetus for development of methodological work.

MSK research within Leeds is conducted across the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine and the NIHR Leeds Musculoskeletal Biomedical Research Unit, which is recognised as internationally excellent, and has existing strong collaborations with the CTRU. The complexity of MSK patient management means that expertise in research methods specific to this clinical discipline is crucial to ensure that research studies are designed efficiently, using modern methodology, and analysed and interpreted appropriately, and that we have the best chance of securing external funding to complete trials. There is scope and opportunity for you to build on the existing and successful multidisciplinary research partnerships, involving both clinical and methodological expertise.

You will have a background, or enthusiasm for developing expertise, in one or more current methodological research area, such as early phase trials, trials including stratified or personalised treatment regimes, dynamic treatment strategies, multi-arm-multi-stage and other adaptive trials, or cohort clinical trials.

You will have significant proven research experience within applied statistics, clinical trials or a related area. You will develop a research profile in clinical trials and novel research methods for MSK addressing the methodological hurdles that must be overcome to enable sound inferences to be made in this multidisciplinary and complex research environment.

You will provide the focused methodological leadership for the development and oversight of the conduct of a portfolio of clinical trials research in MSK disease.

You will contribute to the School's ambition to excel in REF2020, with a sustained record of internationally excellent publications and help to attract funding to support clinical trials in this area.

You will co-supervise PhD students and contribute to the clinical trials module on the MSc in Statistics and Epidemiology.
