Dear
all
After many years of
service I have been asked about an Endocrine function
test that I have never come across.
Exercise induced
hypoglycaemia test.
Has any one seen
these done?
The endocrinologist
is asking for plasma glucose, ketones, insulin, c-peptide,
glucagon, cortisol, growth hormone, catecholamines and
lactate to be measured at baseline then after exercising
at maximum predicted heart rate (220 - age) for 30 minutes
or when tired.
POC glucose measured
every 10 minutes.
After a light lunch
this is repeated 2 hours after the
lunch.
Test stopped if
symptomatically hypoglycaemic or glucose below 2
mmol/L.
Seems fairly
traumatic for the patient and expensive as far as assays are
concerned.
Have I been missing
out on something useful? Any comments would be
appreciated.
