I find lists like this surprising when they bracket together .doc and .docx, and .xls and .xlsx; where the first is a private
binary format which changed over time, and was not properly documented in public, and the latter is (more or less) an implementation
of an ISO standard format. Really not the same type of beast at all.
oh well, back down off the soapbox. At least I am not asking why TeX files are not listed.
