ONE-DAY SEMINAR ON LANGUAGE SERVICES IN HEALTH CARE
London 12 November 2014
Hosted by Middlesex University and the Working Group on Languages in Health Care (WoLSH) in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL)
Spoken language interpreting in the National Health Service is in crisis. A vicious circle of low pay, low status, ad hoc provision of language services ensures the widespread use of patients' family members or untrained bilinguals as interpreters, who pose risks to patients, clinicians and institutions.
The Working Group on Language Services in Healthcare (WoLSH) was formed in 2008 to address matters of interpretation in health care. The remit of the group is to inform and persuade key policy makers of the value of using qualified interpreters health care, and to encourage the development of high-quality language services in the NHS.
With preparations for the 2015 review of commissioning arrangements underway, the WoLSH group invites you to participate in this one-day seminar on interpreting in health care. The objectives of the day are to promote informed dialogue between practitioners, commissioners and providers of interpreting and translation in health care and to shape the agenda for the WoLSH group in the run up to the 2015 commissioning round.
