How can we research music history in today's digital age? The horizons of historical musicology are being expanded by the methods and resources offered by digitisation and data analysis. This study day marks the completion of the Big Data History of Music project, which has made the catalogue records of the British Library's music collections available for large-scale data analysis. The study day is intended to show how data analysis can complement existing musicological approaches (ranging from cultural history to source studies). It is intended for researchers of musicology and of the digital humanities, including PhD students who wish to learn more about the range of digital methods open to them.
Speakers include Stephen Rose (Royal Holloway), Sandra Tuppen (British Library), Loukia Drosopoulou (Royal Holloway), Laurent Pugin (RISM Switzerland), Marnix van Berchum (Utrecht) and Tim Crawford (Goldsmiths).
This event is free but booking is essential. Please contact Loukia Drosopoulou ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) if you would like to attend.
The study day is preceded by a hackathon on data produced by the Big Data History of Music project, held at the British Library on Tuesday 10th March 2015. Please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> if you wish to participate in the hackathon.
These events are part of the AHRC-funded Big Data History of Music project, a collaboration between Royal Holloway and the British Library.
