Hi James
I've been looking for a similar setup for ages as an alternative to my full SLR kit plus lightstand. In particular, I wanted something portable so I could use it in local history archives etc with the wonderful ScannerPro app on my iPad. I recommend ScannerPro as it has the capability to straighten documents and sharpen text with ease. In fact, it works very well as a capture mechanism using a handheld iPad in full light - but in low light conditions it definitely needs a stand.
In the end, after extensive research, I settled on a Modahaus 300 kit (www.modahaus.com) which, although not cheap, appeared to satisfy many criteria - portability, iPad friendly, diffuse light, etc. Sadly it too has fallen short of the mark. The polymer stand is too flimsy to support the iPad for any length of time (although it would be fine with an iPhone); the corner fixings have a tendency to spring out of position; and A4 documents only just fall within its shape so rapid document scanning is a challenge.
I have strengthened the stand with packing foam and gaffer tape to make it more resilient, but that has removed its portability. Also, as the height is not adjustable, it is not simple to scan the many and varied photos and documents that are found in archives.
I also tried using a locker room folding shelf which has great portability and rigidity, but creates shadows on the material from most light sources.
So - a partial solution. I will be experimenting with the folding locker shelf and internal strips of LED lights and continuing to search for other alternatives. I look forward to hearing more about the Standscan. TBC
Best wishes
Angela
