On behalf of a consortium of funders, the Wellcome Trust is seeking an
experienced project manager to develop, commission, and manage a survey of
researchers to establish their participation and attitudes to public
engagement, draft recommendations, and support dissemination around the
project.
Ideally, the individual will be experienced in survey design, testing,
delivery and interpretation, have knowledge of the research and university
sector in UK and experience of commissioning and managing contractors.
The individual should be available to work on the project 3.5 days a week
from early October 2014 and would ideally be able to commit to seeing the
programme through to its completion in September 2015. They will report to
Chloe Sheppard, Researcher’s Engagement Manager at the Wellcome Trust.

Following this discussion, we invite formal responses, which should be
submitted by 22 September 2014. This should include an outline of relevant
experience and expected fees (no more than 2 sides of A4). CVs can be
appended. Interviews will be held on 30 September 2014.
Project Brief
Key objectives:
To develop, commission, and manage a survey of researchers to establish
their participation and attitudes to public engagement, draft
recommendations, and support dissemination around the project.
Main tasks (responsibilities and accountabilities):
1. Lead a high-quality quantitative survey with interviews to examine the
views and experiences of UK researchers regarding public engagement.
2. Provide support to the Project Steering Group and ensure their guidance
and advice is followed.
3. Manage the programme of work: agreeing project schedules and budgets
and monitoring progress to ensure that the project achieves the agreed
objectives.
4. Manage the tender process and oversee the delivery of the survey and
related publications.
5. Produce recommendations with the Project Steering Group and contractors
based on the evidence gathered in the survey.
6. Support the funders’ communication departments to identify and pursue
opportunities to raise awareness of the survey so that it is accessible to
a wide variety of external audiences
Organisational relationships:
• Work with staff within the Engaging Science department, reporting to the
Researchers Engagement Manager, and with the Trust’s Strategic Planning
and Policy Unit.
• Work with a large range of internal and external partners, including
academics, to maximize the survey’s reach and influence
• Build strong working relationships with project funders, including the
Project Steering Group.
• Responsible for managing the work of external contractors as and when
required.
• Supported by a shared departmental coordinator
