*Call for Papers - Special Issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism*
*_Tourism and indigenous peoples: exploring sustainability and innovation_*
The Journal of Sustainable Tourism is now calling for expressions of
interest for papers for a special issue on tourism and indigenous peoples.
Indigenous tourism is generally viewed as a means of facilitating
socio-economic benefits to indigenous individuals, communities and host
regions. Like all forms of tourism, the development, implementation and
management of indigenous tourism should be underpinned by the principles
of sustainable development. In this context those principles encompass
development that facilitates the economic well-being of indigenous
peoples, ensures that the environment is conserved /and/ kept viable,
and above all, tries to ensure that tourism is used as a positive
opportunity for enhancing the social and cultural sustainability of
indigenous peoples. Indigenous tourism underpinned by the principles of
sustainable development arguably benefits from a nuanced understanding
of issues related to indigenous cultural experiences, histories,
politics, values and traditions (amongst others).
The proposed special issue aims to profile sustainability and indigenous
tourism through papers that address issues related to indigenous
knowledge and cultural traditions, governance, market research and
implementation, product development, language use, maintenance and
growth, heritage interpretation and authenticity. The issue seeks to
relate to the sustainable development and management of indigenous
tourism products in urban, rural/remote, outdoor recreation and nature
based tourism environments, which may often hold cultural ‘place’
values. From a tourism context, indigenous peoples may actively manage
and provide experiences but, if not empowered, find themselves to have
been ‘Other-ed’ as an ‘additional attraction’ for visitors or
recreationists.
The /Journal of Sustainable Tourism/ advances critical understanding of
the relationships between tourism and sustainable development. The
journal publishes theoretical, conceptual and empirical research that
explores one or more of the economic, social, cultural, political,
organisational or environmental aspects of the subject. Contributions
are from all disciplinary perspectives, with inter-disciplinary work
being especially welcome. The /Journal of Sustainable Tourism/
encourages critical views, as well as new ideas and approaches in
relation to the theory and practice linking tourism and sustainability.
It has published numerous special issues to draw attention to key issues
in the subject over its 22 years of publication. Further information
about the journal is available at www.tandfonline.com/jost

Papers in the proposed issue could include, but are not limited
to, topics exploring (a) collaborative indigenous tourism development,
(b) sustainable issues in indigenous tourism/ recreation/leisure
environments with regard to triple bottom line/quadruple bottom line
considerations (c) indigenous tourism entrepreneurship/innovation (d)
theoretical and methodological reflections pertaining to indigenous
tourism development.
