Enterovirus D68 is sweeping through Midwest cities and hospitalizing a lot
of children in its wake. Respiratory cases have allegedly peaked since
students have gone back to school in late August.

.

"The virus causes symptoms like a cold, except worse, and is prompting up
to 30 children a day to seek care at one Kansas City hospital, where about
15% of the youngsters were placed in intensive care," CNN reports. "In
Kansas City, about 450 children were recently treated at Children's Mercy
Hospital, and at least 60 of them received intensive hospitalization,
spokesman Jake Jacobson said."

.

Nationwide Children's Hospital in East Columbus, Ohio has reportedly seen
a spike of 20% more respiratory illnesses since last weekend. Likewise,
Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois, admitted seven of the more than 70
children who came in for respiratory issues. Both hospitals have sent
samples for testing to confirm the virus.

What is Enterovirus EV-D68, the disease causing alarm in the Midwest?

By Jethro Mullen, CNN

(CNN) -- A respiratory virus that has sent hundreds of children to
hospitals in Missouri is causing alarm across the Midwest and beyond.

.

Ten states have contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
for help investigating clusters of the virus that's being blamed for the
illness.

.

snip

.

The bug that appears to be causing most of the concern has a typically
arcane name -- Enterovirus EV-D68 -- but many of its symptoms are very
common.

.

snip

.

Enteroviruses, which bring on symptoms like a very intense cold, aren't
unusual. They're actually very common.

.

snip

.

There are more than 100 types of enteroviruses causing about 10 to 15
million infections in the United States each year, according to the CDC.
They are carried in the intestinal tract and often spread to other parts
of the body.

.

snip

.

It was first identified in the 1960s and there have been fewer than 100
reported cases since that time. But it's possible, Pallansch said, that
the relatively low number of reports might be because EV-D68 is hard to
identify.

.

EV-D68 was seen last year in the United States and this year in various
parts of the world. Over the years, clusters have been reported in
Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and various countries including the
Philippines, Japan and the Netherlands.

.

snip

.

The virus can start as just a cold. Signs include coughing, difficulty
breathing and in some cases a rash. Sometimes they can be accompanied by
fever or wheezing.

.

snip

.

The good news is that enteroviruses usually aren't deadly.

.

"All of these folks are going to get better," said Schaffner. "Some of
them have more severe illness, such as these children who have developed
asthma and are hospitalized. But they should all get better."

.

Many of the EV-D68 infections "will be mild and self-limited, requiring
only symptomatic treatment," the Missouri health agency said.

.

Some cases could, in theory, contribute to death, but none of the Missouri
cases have resulted in death and no data are available for overall
morbidity and mortality from the virus in the United States, the agency
said.

.

How widespread are the cases?

.

Beyond the surge in infections in Missouri, there are signs of a possible
regional outbreak of EV-D68.

.

Colorado, Illinois and Ohio are reporting cases with similar symptoms and
are awaiting testing results, according to officials and CNN affiliates in
those states.

.

The 10 states that have reached out to the CDC for assistance are
Colorado, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas,
Oklahoma, and Kentucky.

.

The unusually high number of hospitalizations reported now could be "just
the tip of the iceberg in terms of severe cases," said Pallansch of the
CDC.

Virus hospitalizing children in Midwest in large numbers

Over 450 cases have been recorded in Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas
City and St. Louis Children's Hospital has seen a 50 percent increase in
patients suffering from this disease. Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children
in Denver has also seen several cases of children affected from the rare
virus.

.

.

"It's worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require
intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I've practiced for 30 years
in pediatrics, and I've never seen anything quite like this," she added.

'Unprecedented' Virus Outbreak Hits Midwest, Leaves Kids Gasping

As if the Ebola scares weren't enough. Now a respiratory virus is rapidly
spreading across the midwest infecting hundreds of children, often sending
them to the intensive care unit.

.

The virus has been identified as Human enterovirus 68, or EV-D68. It is
uncommon. Initially discovered in the 1960s, there have been less than 100
cases until this recent outbreak. However, that low number might be
because the virus is hard to identify. The initial symptoms are similar to
a common cold, but give way to severe respiratory problems. After just a
few hours, children can be left gasping for breath and requiring immediate
attention in the ICU.

.

Dr. Mark Pallansch, director of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention's Division of Viral Diseases, told CNN that the high number of
Midwest hospitalizations could be "just the tip of the iceberg in terms of
severe cases."

.

snip

.

Officials are fearing that the virus may spread out of the Midwest or
start affecting adults. Hannibal Regional Hospital issued the following
warning on their Facebook page.

.

"That children 16 and under and persons with the following symptoms
refrain from visiting patients who are hospitalized at Hannibal Regional
Hospital until further notice."

.

There is no vaccine yet for the Midwest virus, nor are there any specific
treatments to best tackle EV-D68.
