A Research Associate is required in a new project studying the
interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetic field system.
The solar wind charge exchange process (SWCX) can be used to map the
time-varying global structure of the solar wind plasma in geospace.
X-ray measurements of SWCX within the Earth's exosphere by current
astrophysical observatories such as XMM-Newton provide a novel method of
testing theoretical models of the global structure of the solar wind
plasma derived from simulations. The primary task of the project will be
to derive theoretical time- dependent 3-dimensional spatial models of
the X-ray emissivity due to charge exchange emission in geospace using
as input magnetohydrodynamic models (MHD simulations) of the
magnetosphere. The X-ray emissivity models will then be compared against
existing measurements of charge exchange emission by X-ray observatories.
