VFactor - A volunteer collaboration with Diatoms
2 October 2014 14:30
Flett Events Theatre
FREE
Come and hear about the latest V Factor collaboration, in the Microbial and Genomic Division, working on the occasionally overlooked and critically important diatom collection.
The aim of this project was to collate and digitise Thomas Combers’ diatom collection, which involved databasing 2,850 microscope slides and linking all the disparate elements (slides, bottles, notes and drawings) for easy reference. It applied museum best practice, from pest control to the perfect specimen label, and created a Scratchpad – the equivalent to Facebook for specimens – called Diatoms Online.
Speakers: Jovita Yesilyurt, Collections Manager Edgley Cesar, Curatorial Assistant, and Ali Thomas, Volunteer Project Manager, VFactor volunteer leader team: Renee Miller, Yoke-Shum Broom, Rehemat Bhatia and Peter Baker)
What it will include
• a look at diatoms and the Scratchpad Diatoms Online
• discussion on inclusion and diversity
• discussion on volunteer management and volunteers in collections care
• opportunity to see the Museum of Tiny
Who is it for?
The seminar is open to all museum professionals. We welcome colleagues from other institutions.
