Dear List Members,
We have an explosives store at Nenthead which is being conserved and rebuilt as part of a Natural England funded conservation plan.
We have a good understanding of the walls and the exterior, but we lack knowledge of the interior.
I have looked at some of the remaining stores in the North Pennines and gleaned fragments of knowledge about the walls, ceiling and floors. We also have another store on site which had open rack type shelving, presumably for storing boxes of dynamite. Browsing images on the internet, I see that some gunpowder stores included two closely spaced joists, on which the barrels of gunpowder would be placed - very much like a beer cellar. We have evidence of such joists in our explosives store.
I ask whether list members can point me at any buildings, photos, drawings etc which might provide useful information about the details of a mining gunpowder store interior.
We have some photos on our website at www.nentheadmines.com
