At first glance, those seem like useful distinctions - I can't see any issues with them - but let me tart up some more War Memorial records and see if anything comes to mind - hopefully not

Subject: [MASSMAIL]Re: War Memorials (again)
Dear all
This question has arisen a few times since our War Memorial Listing Project so I have provisionally created the following terms:
As narrow terms of War Memorial
War Memorial (Freestanding) : A freestanding structure commemorating nations, actions, soldiers and/or civilians that served or died as a result of conflict. (use if Reasons for Designation is War Memorial)
War Memorial Tribute : An attached Plaque, Inscription, Mural or Display commemorating nations, actions, soldiers and/or civilians that served or died as a result of conflict.
This leaves the original, War Memorial : A structure, building or site commemorating soldiers and civilians killed in war.
I was thinking that the higher term of War Memorial may then be double Indexed with another Monument Type if it's different. For example a Lychgate constructed as a memorial would be War Memorial and Lychgate with details in the Display Date.
I would welcome your thoughts?

Lots of options for this - but it sounds to me that a new term is needed - to represent a war memorial that is a standalone cross type thing (though there not always crosses) - not volunteering to define it - I am sure we know what we mean (you know - the one on the village green/in the town square type)- but come up with a definition...??
Best wishes

I can't remember either, but I'm wondering if double indexing the record with cenotaph would do the job?

Apologies if this is a problem of my memory but was the question of how to identify War Memorials ever sorted out? The thesaurus term "War Memorial" covers anything that memorialises the fallen (village halls, chapels, plaques in churches, framed scrolls on stations etc) but there doesn't seem to be a term for what most people would recognise as a war memorial - a sculptural or architectural thing whose only function is as a memorial. The fact that it is hard to describe what a war memorial is suggests to me that they are a discreet monument type.
My reason for questioning this, is of course, that I have been asked how many war memorials (actual things) we have and am finding it hard to exclude all the war memorials that are buildings or parts of buildings.
