Can the UK successfully introduce segregated cycle infrastructure without
also adopting Dutch-style priority rules? This and some other wider
implications of TRL's large programme of off street trials of cycling
infrastructure will be discussed in detail.
The first set of TRL trial reports to be published concern certain aspects of the
design of segregated cycle tracks within the carriageway and form part of a
wider body of evidence that TfL has drawn upon in developing its updated
London Cycling Design Standards, which is now out for consultation.
Although not the focus of TRL's work, these trials have highlighted the
importance of the different approaches to priority between the UK and
countries such as the Netherlands that affect the management of conflicts at
junctions between segregated cycle tracks and vehicles turning in and out of
the main carriageway.
