I wonder if a forum/online chat could be established for those outside of London who are not able to make it but would like to join in could be arranged? Maybe something on the Community Psychology Ning?

Warm Regards

Lucy

Hi Fabio, Jacqui, Mark,

Thanks for the encouraging responses!

Jacqui, yes good idea, they'd be very welcome, feel free to forward thanks!

Fabio, I think we could try something like Skype, although we would need to figure out how it will work practically - if the wifi connection is strong enough we could perhaps try with a laptop or tablet and see how possible it is for you to participate. It may also depend a bit on the group size how easy that is to manage. I've been involved with a group before when someone's been away and we managed okay with a laptop, but obviously its dependant on strength of internet connection and it wasn't always successful, so it might just require flexible expectations!
But otherwise we could find a way of touching base with you after the group or filling you in on discussions. I'd be happy to talk with you more about that to see how we can include you in one way or another, or support you to do something similar - a buddy-Freire reading group in your area perhaps...!?

And also, if you don't know about them already, the Freire Institute is running online course in the form of live web sessions that enable people from anywhere in the world to join... http://www.freire.org/ (but a slightly different type of setup than an infornal reading group) I've only just discovered this so I can't comment much more about them, but passing it on! others on here might know more.

If you'd like to talk more about that possibility of participating with us feel free to email me off the list, it would be interesting to experiment with... [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and if anyone has any more technical knowhow and experience in that area it could be useful too.

Thanks!

Tamsin

Will this group be open to young people from 18-25 as I know an organisation working with young people using Freirian approaches and some of them may be interested in attending but I don't want to flag it up to them before knowing if it is ok for them to attend?
cheers
jacqui

Hi All,

For those of you who are around London...a friend and I are organising a little Pedagogy of the Oppressed reading group for the month of October (or so!).

Anyone who's interested in reading and chatting about it would be more than welcome to join us! See below for details.

Tamsin

**************************************

Would you like to join us for a short-term reading group of Paulo Freire's book Pedagogy of the Oppressed?

We have been meaning to read this book in its entirety for years and so decided to create a reading group for ourselves and others who would also like to read it. It will be a group run by and for anyone involved or interested in radical social change. It will also be a chance to discuss how the questions that come up apply to our world and different areas of work and organising.

We plan to meet once a week for 4 weeks (although we're flexible - if we need an extra week or two to finish or to work around people's schedules the group can decide on that when it arises). The book is made up of just 4 chapters, so we will read one chapter per week.

About the book: Here's an introductory blurb from published copy of the book
'Pedagogy of the Oppressed is one of the foundational texts in the field of critical pedagogy, which attempts to help students question and challenge domination, and the beliefs and practices that dominate. Every person, however "ignorant" or submerged in the "culture of silence," can look critically at his or her world through a process of dialogue with others, and can gradually come to perceive his personal and social reality, think about it, and take action in regard to it.' (back cover)
Link to a free pdf copy: https://libcom.org/files/FreirePedagogyoftheOppressed.pdf
Or if you'd like to buy a hard copy, you can order it online from Housemans for £7.25: http://www.hive.co.uk/search/pedagogy+of+the+oppressed/mediatype/all/

First meeting: Wednesday 8th October 7pm-9pm
NB. Please let us know if you would like to come but have a problem with making the dates or times

Venue for the first session: Royal Festival Hall in Waterloo, meeting near the main foyer bar next to the Clore Ballroom.

If you can't find us, our numbers are:
Laura 07813767904
Tamsin 07879676666

Open Group: All are welcome to join us, but we may suggest the group becomes a closed group at halfway point after the first couple of meetings or so, so we can better get to know each other develop discussion over time.

If interested please email: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and we will confirm dates and venue.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Laura and Tamsin
