?
Greetings,
I am writing on behalf of Shanell Johnson, Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) Officer at University College London Union (UCLU). Through the UCLU BME campaign, we have worked on a number of projects to raise awareness about BME contributions to the university; emphasise the importance of a varied Black History whose scope reaches further than the Atlantic Slave Trade; build a culture of appreciation for BME presence at the university in both academic and social settings; and to build ties with the wider community.
We are excited to share with you some of the products of this campaign. You will find attached the 'Black History Month Handbook' which details how to run a series of successful Black History Month events at a university. The handbook includes brief details about each event that was run at the 2013 Black History Month Celebrations at UCL, and documents logistical considerations. It also contains an appendix which includes contract templates, call sheet templates and more.
The links below are to a series of filmed talks called Black History Talks. These talks were devised to shed light on a number of Black history, Black spirituality and Black experience topics that are often excluded from Black History Month events catered towards young people in the UK. The speakers are Andrew 'The Investigator' Muhammad, head of the UK branch of the Nation of Islam; Robin 'Black History Man' Walker, author of a number of Black history books; and Dalian Adofo, producer of 'Ancestral Voices' and 'Ancestral Voices 2'.
Please use these talks to promote debate throughout the year, especially during Black History Month 2014.
