*Cutting across the linguistic boundaries of Anglophone and Hispanic
traditions and the national borders of Trinidad and Tobago (TT) and Cuba,
this presentation explores the vibrant contemporary movements of TT spoken
word and Cuban blogging. Comparative perspective of these emergent
Caribbean literary forms highlights the ways both draw on the historical,
aesthetic and philosophical traditions of their respective national
contexts and twenty-first century technological innovation. Departing from
the spoken word videos of various TT artistes and a range of Cuban blogs,
this reading maps the ways these alternative expressions contest
institutional, mainstream and commercial forces in both form and content in
unexpectedly similar ways. Comparative consideration of these literary
transgressions thus offers an invigorating possibility to reconfigure the
ways literature, popular protest and artistic expression may be “read”
across the region.*
