TO ALL COLLEAGUES:

You are invited to attend a 1-day Strategic Workshop funded by the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Newcastle University and
Newcastle Forum for Human Rights and Social Justice (Newcastle Law
School):

ETHNIC CONFLICT IN XINJIANG, CHINA: How far is insecurity the product
of increased securitisation?
Friday 3rd October 2014
Research Beehive 2.22, Old Library Building

This workshop brings together UK experts to discuss worsening ethnic
conflict in Xinjiang and China proper, and to consider how far the
increased violence is related to increased state securitisation. Here,
state securitisation is conceived in a broad sense, including not just
its obvious manifestations such as the increased military and police
presence in Xinjiang but also the series of unpopular state policies
imposed on the region since the mid-1990s, which infringe upon basic
human rights: accelerated in-migration of the majority Han; the
imposition of the monolingual (Chinese-medium) education system;
repression of innocuous religious activities; censorship of literary
and cultural products, and so on. Experts will consider alternative
routes that might be taken in the pursuit of a truly secure
environment on China's north-western border.
