Subject: Current Trends & Future Directions for Digital Imaging in Libraries & Archives: Registration now open
Registration for the Wellcome Trust and Digital Preservation Coalition's (DPC) 'Current Trends and Future Directions for Digital Imaging in Libraries and Archives' event is now open. The conference will take place in the Wellcome Trust's Gibb Building in London on 10th November, and is a free event.
The day-long event will address issues of validation, compression and preservation which have each become more important in image management as collections grow in size and complexity.
"On one hand compression is seen as a necessary requirement to deal with the scale of the collection, but preservation advice generally discourages compression which is seen as a preservation risk," explains Christy Henshaw of the Wellcome Trust. "Validation is essential for quality assurance in the development of large collections and is a necessary component in the development of a preservation plan: but adds another process in our workflows thus adding complexity and expense."
So how to compress without risking loss? How to validate without adding complexity and expense? How to preserve with limited storage capacities?
Underlying these issues are developments related to JPEG2000 (JP2K), an open standard for the compression of images. Because it can offer visually lossless compression JP2k can have a dramatic impact on access and distribution of images.
"This one-day workshop will bring together a range of specialist practitioners with experience of JP2K for digital libraries and digital archives, and will shed light on current and emerging practice and will enable a debate about future directions" says William Kilbride of the DPC.
Visit the DPC website to register for the 'Current Trends and Future Directions for Digital Imaging in Libraries and Archives' event.<http://www.dpconline.org/events/details/83-JP2000?xref=97>
Places are strictly limited and should be booked in advance. If you book a place and can't attend, please let us know no later than 14 days before the event, otherwise we will charge you a non-attendance fee of £30.00, to cover the cost of your place.

PDF Tools AG | Blog: Are the PDF/A space requirements a show stopper for
archiving?
A PDF/A document requires that all resources such as fonts, color profiles,
etc. must be embedded in the file. The archiving of transactional documents
can be nightmare because such documents are usually short by nature and
contain huge number of copies of the same Frutiger font, sRGB color profile
and company logo. Many archives therefore prefer TIFF over PDF/A when it
comes to born-digital documents. But that is certainly not the idea of a
uniform standard. How can this problem be solved?

Rare Sanskrit manuscripts crying for attention - The Times of India
Mussoorie: At a time when the state is gearing up to host a global Sanskrit
meet from September 26, two rare manuscripts in the same language — Panchang
(the Hindu calendar) and BhagwatPuran (religious text), which date back to
1590 and 1806 respectively, are crying for attention.
On March 27, 2010, historian Gopal Bhardwaj, who possesses these valuable
documents, took them to the Archeological Survey of India's lab in the city
for their scientific conservation. After examining the manuscripts, the ASI
mentioned that the documents were in a "very bad shape" and required urgent
conversation to prevent further deterioration.

A Glimpse Into NASA's New History Archives | The Planetary Society
Last summer, Chief Archivist Jane Odom and her small group packed up the
entire reference collection, housed on the bottom floor of HQ, and moved it
off site. Once workers completed construction on the new rooms, the
archivists moved everything back in, placing each box in the collection
into a new location. Since the rooms are now completely different than the
former arrangement, Jane and her team spent months creating a new a catalog
to let them know where they put everything. With some 30,000 files in the
collection, this was no easy feat!

Subject: Volunteers with palaeography and Latin skills needed for the Wiltshire MDR
The Wiltshire Manorial Documents Register is in the process of being revised, thanks to funding from the National Archives and others, and we are in urgent need of volunteers to help with checking catalogued records and cataloguing unlisted manorial material within collections held at Wiltshire and Swindon Archives. The majority of court records prior to 1733 (excluding the Commonwealth) will be in Latin so knowledge of Latin will be an advantage, although we can provide training in reading basic standard phrases. A knowledge of medieval and/or Tudor palaeography would also be an advantage, although, again, training in reading old handwriting will be provided.
We are ideally looking for volunteers to begin work in November 2014, continuing for a few months until (at the latest) the end of September 2015 when the project officially ends. Volunteers will be based in our search room, at Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham.
If you are interested in participating please let me know at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Please indicate whether you have experience of reading medieval palaeography, Tudor palaeography and/or Latin. I can then provide further details and invite you to attend appropriate training.
Thank you very much in anticipation.

Subject: Lantern slides collection
Dear all,
I am wondering about the value and interest of a lantern slides collection that we have here in the archives. They date from the early 20th century and most of them represent landscapes and people of India. I imagine they were used for vocation promotion or fundraising campaigns at an early stage of the Congregation. I have absolutely nothing documenting this collection and I have to decide whether to keep it or not.
I know a similar query has been posted on the list about 2 years ago but I could only find one answer to it and I would really appreciate if the lantern slides specialists of the list would care to share their knowledge again. What makes the value (archival value I mean, I have no intention to sell it) of such a collection? What would be the specialist repositories in the UK for lantern slides?
Many thanks in advance for you time and answers.
Kind regards
Annaig Boyer

Statistics Survey Report:
http://www.ala.org/alcts/sites/ala.org.alcts/files/
content/resources/preserv/presstats/FY2013PreservationStatistics.pdf
Forty institutions responded to the FY2013 Preservation Statistics Survey;
their data allowed analysis of preservation activities for fiscal year 2013
(as defined by the respondent’s institution) and facilitated the evaluation
of trends in preservation administration, conservation, reformatting /
digitization, and digital preservation activities. In addition to the
Report, the FY2013 Survey data set is also available for download.
The Preservation Statistics Survey is a project to document and analyze the
preservation activities of cultural heritage institutions in the United
States. The Preservation Statistics Survey is an effort coordinated by the
Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the American Library
Association (ALA) and the Association of Library Collections and Technical
Services (ALCTS). For more information, visit the Preservation Statistics
website:
http://www.ala.org/alcts/resources/preservation/presstats
In anticipation of the FY2014 Preservation Statistics Survey, which will
open in January 2015 and be significantly shortened to include only
production-based data (administrative and budgetary data will be collected
approximately every three years), view a preview of the questionnaire:
http://www.ala.org/alcts/sites/ala.org.alcts/files/
