The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The Royal Opera House Collections contain materials covering the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732.
We are currently seeking an experienced Archivist (fixed-term) to assist in the preservation, management and development of, and engagement with, the Collections. The Archivist will represent the interests of the Collections and the Royal Opera House both within the organisation and externally, deputizing for the Acting Head of ROH Collections where necessary.
Reporting to the Acting Head of ROH Collections, responsibilities of the role include:
- Assisting in the preservation and management of the Collections held at Covent Garden and at off-site stores in Kent and Surrey, and assisting in the relocation of the Costume Collection to a new store in 2015.
- Managing the information and research service for internal and external users to support ROH objectives and meet research needs.
- Identifying and appraising material offered to the Collections for donation or purchase, and managing the acquisition procedure.
- Leading the cataloguing of the Collections, by identifying cataloguing priorities and carrying out a review and revision of the cataloguing structure.
The successful candidate will hold a post-graduate qualification in Archives Administration/Management and be able to demonstrate:
- Considerable experience of working in archives, preferably special collections.
- Experience of managing collections and identifying conservation needs.
- Experience of providing information and reader services.
- Experience of cataloguing complex collections to professional standards using ISAD(G) and experience of cataloguing databases, ideally Adlib.
- Experience of appraising and acquiring new material for collections.
- Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people including members of the public, the press and potential donors.
