We are happy to announce the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies
symposium on 'Citizenship and Migration', that will be held on October
22-24 2014. The symposium will begin with a lecture by the prominent
feminist theorist *Prof. Dr. Jasbir Puar *(Rutgers University USA). Puar
is the author of 'Terrorist Assemblages. Homonationalism in Queer Times'
(Duke University Press 2007) in which she combines transnational
feminist and queer theory, Foucauldian biopolitics, Deleuzian
philosophy, and technoscience criticism. She examines how liberal
politics incorporate certain queer subjects into the fold of the
nation-state, though depending on the production of populations of
Orientalized terrorist bodies.
The talk by Jasbir Puar will be followed by a panel discussion with
Finnish writers and activits (Maryan Abdulkarim and Alexandra Salmela
have already confirmed their participation). In a discussion moderated
by Miikka Pyykkönen (University of Jyväskylä), they will explore
questions of citizenship and belonging in contemporary Finnish society
and culture.
The second and the third symposium day will feature other prominent
speakers from various geographical locations and different disciplines,
who will address the conference themes from a variety of theoretical
angles (Rinaldo Walcott, Meyda Yeg(enog(lu, Karel Arnaut, Peter
Geschiere, Diana Mulinari, Anne-Marie Fortier, Bridget Byrne, Olli
Löytty, Anu Koivunen, Maijastina Kahlos, and Sarah Bracke). Yet, what
unites them is a critical feminist, transnational and/or postcolonial
perspective that tries to grasp the complicated workings of power and
affects in processes of belonging and citizenship.
