Hello Everyone,
I am chair of a local committee here in the State of Washington preparing a
one-year grant proposal which is to include performing built-environment
accessibility reviews for local premises.
We have worked with a number of disability groups and a local university to
develop a comprehensive checklist to identify 150 or so such barriers for a
variety of disabilities. These are not Americans with Disability Act audits.
Instead, they are reviews based on what local people with disabilities have
told us are important to them when deciding which restaurant, cinema, coffee
shop, grocer, etc. to frequent. We are not in a position to 'certify' any
place as 'compliant'. Therefore, we will only list what a facility has or
does not have, measurements of doorways, weights of door pulls, lighting
levels, etc.
Most of us are new at this, but for the proposal I need to project the
amount of time needed to perform these. By the way, we have already decided
that only teams of two or more individuals are to do these audits.
I realize there are many, many variables involved. However, in your
experience, how much time is required on average to do one accessibility
audit of a retailer, cafe, theatre, etc, -- including time for scheduling
with premises owners, recording the relevant data, compiling a brief report,
and so forth.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you,
