Subject: [NEW-MEDIA-CURATING] Useful Writing and Publishing Resources
Friends,
Yesterday, I posted new and updated material to the “Research & Writing Skills” section of my Academia.edu page at URL
https://swinburne.academia.edu/KenFriedman
The guide to free research writing resources and books is significantly improved. In addition to adding writing tools from several publishers and universities, I have added a new category for people who want help improving specific articles and papers. Most of this material is free — some is for sale by various publishers and services.
The sections are:
1 How to Write Well
2 Research Writing Workshop
3 How to Prepare and Present a Conference Paper
4 How to Write for Journals
5 Scientific and Scholarly Writing
6 APA Style Manual and Free Tutorials
7 Writing and Editorial Services
Up-to-date links for each resource, book, or tool are embedded in the PDF.
The most important improvement is a new section on writing and editing services. First is an online service that allows authors to improve articles and papers by using a sophisticated online program. The service is called Grammarly. Authors paste blocks of text into an on-screen window — the service then uses a computer program to review the text. The program checks for over 250 different issues and problems in grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation and offers suggested improvements. It also checks for style and plagiarism, and it even offers sources and suggested references with proper citations. Grammarly is not perfect, but it is an excellent service that researchers and research students can afford.
Editorial services are a next step for authors who seek professional help polishing articles for publication. I suggest two editing services. The reason I suggest these two services is that they provide rich information on their web sites, and useful free newsletters. Since I have not used these services, I offer no opinion about the quality of the editorial work they do, but the prices are reasonable for this kind of work.
In addition to the research writing resources guide, the section on research and writing skills includes an updated and improved guide to presenting research at conferences, also with links to useful books and free resources on speaking for a live audience with effective slides. Along with this, I have updated the PowerPoint presentation for the Research Writing Workshop.
All these materials are free for use in seminars and teaching. You will find them at:

Warm wishes,
Ken Friedman
