The Advanced ELENA Conference, which this year will be co-hosted by the Institute of Immigration Law, Leiden University, will explore the use of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in immigration and asylum law, and will be held on 24 – 25 October 2014 in Leiden University, the Netherlands.
The conference will look into the application of the Charter to immigration and asylum law generally, which will be followed by a presentation from the perspective of the Court of Justice of the EU as to how the Charter has influenced European case law in the area of asylum and immigration. Following this there will be an examination of a number of topics in light of the Charter including accessing the asylum procedure, effective remedies, detention practices as well as examining the scope of Article 18 of the Charter. There will also be a number of workshops looking at different procedural issues as well as exploring the right to family life and reception and detention conditions in light of the Charter.
Speakers include, Judge Bay Larsen, Court of Justice of the European Union, Judge Boštjan Zalar, High Court Judge, Administrative Court of the Republic of Slovenia, Professor Steve Peers, Dr. Cathryn Costello, Dr. Marcelle Reneman, Dr. Liam Thornton, Professor Peter Rodrigues and Mark Klaassen PhD candidate.
The aim of the conference is to provide practical insights to legal practitioners on how to improve asylum and immigration policies and practices using the Charter.
This year we are delighted to announce that ECRE/ELENA will be able to provide a limited number of bursaries to legal practitioners from across the EU. The bursaries will be funded by the European Commission under the FRAME Project that aims to promote the use of the Charter amongst legal practitioners protecting the rights of vulnerable migrants.
