As some people may already know, Jim Hillier has died after a long illness. This will be sad news for the many people who knew him or have been influenced by his work. He was instrumental in the development of film and television studies in the UK, first at the British Film Institute and then at Reading. He was widely known through his work on Cahiers du Cinema and Hollywood of the classical and more recent periods. Moreover, he was a warm and generous supporter of many of us over the years and will be especially missed by me and my colleagues at Reading.
