Dear All,
A 4-year fixed-term postdoctoral research position is available for an
outstanding individual in the research group of Dr. Julien Michel at
the School of Chemistry of the University of Edinburgh, United
Kingdom. The successful candidate will be required to develop and
implement on diverse high-performance computing platforms new
molecular simulation algorithms for the prediction of binding
affinities of drug-like molecules to pharmaceutical targets. The
successful applicant will also be expected to contribute more
generally to the work of the Michel group. This position is ideally
suited for an ambitious early career researcher on a path towards an
independent research career.
Applicants should have, or expect to receive by the start date, a PhD
in physical chemistry, chemical physics, or a closely related field.
Some additional postdoctoral experience is advantageous. They should
be capable of working in a small team, leading other students where
required. Experience with theoretical method development is essential,
as is an interest in studying protein-ligand interactions and similar
other molecular recognition processes using sampling algorithms based
on statistical thermodynamics principles. The position will require
substantial modifications of large (>200,000 lines of source code)
molecular simulation software written in Python, C++, CUDA/OpenCL, and
previous experience in scientific software development is essential.
Familiarity with a range of free energy calculation methods used in
simulations of biomolecules would be useful. Familiarity with modern
approaches to rational drug design would be useful. Experience in
management of HPC servers is desirable. The successful applicant will
join a multidisciplinary team working on the European Research Council
funded project “Beyond structure: an integrated
computational/experimental approach to ensemble-based drug design”,
and will be expected to collaborate with other computational and
experimental scientists at the Universities of Edinburgh and Bristol.
The position is available from September 2014. There is some
flexibility with the start date but note that the position will
terminate after 48 months, or by December 1st 2018, whichever comes
first. This is a re-advertisement of a vacancy 030520. Previous
applicants need not re-apply.
Applications will be considered as they are received. Applicants are
strongly encouraged to contact Dr Julien Michel
([log in to unmask]) for informal inquiries about the position
before submitting a formal application.
Formal applications should be submitted to:

Best wishes,
