Person Specification
Short-term archivist for Milngavie Heritage Centre
Milngavie Heritage Centre (at the Town Hall, Milngavie, near Glasgow) is looking for an self-employed archivist on a short-term contract (72 days).
The Heritage Centre possesses the personal archives of several local historians, extending to manuscript draft texts, notes and ephemera, also many photographs. The material provides evidence for the community involvement of the historians and the work they carried out to ensure that community projects were achieved in an appropriate historical context; this in turn led to the setting up of the Heritage Centre itself. Sadly, four of the historians died just at the time that the Centre was being set up, so their papers were passed over to the Centre at that time, by their executors.
Essential Criteria
• Archivist with relevant ARA-accredited postgraduate qualification.
• Interest in working in a community archive setting.
• Interest in Scottish history/local history.
• Relevant IT skills, including usage of social media applications.
• Ability to devise archival finding aids according to ISAD (G).
Desirable Criteria
• Experience in working in a community archive setting.
• Experience with material relating to Scottish history/local history.
• Well-networked within the archive sector and also with history/local history organisations.
• Experience of working with volunteers.
Job Specification
The archivist will work with the Milngavie Heritage Centre Group for an initial 72 days. Working times can be handled very flexibly and the position should be taken up from mid-August 2014. The work place for the archivist is the Heritage Centre at Milngavie Town Hall, Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire. The fee for the work will be £5,000.
The archivist will be expected to work independently but will be able to obtain support and advice from the East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Archivist based at the William Patrick Library, Kirkintilloch. The archivist will use the General International Standard Archival Description to devise finding aids for the Milngavie Heritage Centre material.
The Archivist will:
• Develop on-line accessibility to records held.
• Contribute to encouraging and assisting Heritage Centre volunteer staff in the use of records by this means.
• Assist Heritage Centre volunteers to learn basic archival skills and help them to work with existing and incoming material.
• Provide regular reports to the Milngavie Heritage Centre Committee.
• Help to develop a future strategy for the archive.
• Provide input to educational use of the archive and assist Heritage Centre volunteers to raise public awareness of the archive.
• Facilitate transfer of archives to appropriate storage media, including advice on use of robust storage media for perishable documents.
Please send a single page letter of motivation, together with your CV. We welcome applications from recent graduates.
